Are Infant Classes Worth It?

There are so many businesses out there marketing classes to infants. Do you think that infants really benefit more from a class than from just interacting with their families during everyday life? Are these classes really for the infants or are they a social outlet for the moms? Did you take your infants to classes?

We took our oldest to infant massage class, but it was really a class for the parents to learn how to perform infant massage. The babies were just there for us to practice on. We didn't take the class with our next baby because we had already learned the information.

I don't really understand the whole idea of other classes for infants, such as music and movement. It seems that any parent could stimulate their infant at home without any special training. Just my opinion.

I think they're more for parental education and socialization than anything else. I personally don't see how an infant benefits from a class.....except for receiving a nice massage from mom as she learns how to massage ;)

I agree with ERkat- the classes seem to be more for the parent. When my first daughter was born, I felt compelled to do something with her but I was still working full time and just couldn't squeeze anything in. I regretted that for some time, but now realize three kids later that it isn't a big deal and they can learn just as much, if not more at home.

There is so much pressure on new parents to get involved in all this stuff. When I had my first I got flyers in the mail for music classes, baby massage, and even baby yoga. There was this pressure involved like if you didn't do it, you were robbing your child of some profound experience. It's one of those things that can't hurt to do, but it certainly isn't necessary. I think it is more like social hour for the parents.
