70% of ground beef contains pink slime?

This isn't a food recall, but recently a news story was released regarding the use of pink slime in ground beef products labeled as fresh ground beef. Manufacturers are using beef by-products, adding Ammonia Hydrate to soften, separating the protein from the fat, and then adding this product to fresh ground beef! They're not calling this product a filler so your meat is package & labeled as fresh ground beef! I don't want to purchase beef made with pink slime so I'm going to purchase only organic ground beef from this point forward. However, this is very upsetting to me as I think the USDA has been misleading us! I'm sorry but pink slime is filler and not fresh beef!

I agree. It is misleading. That is why I prefer to buy meat (especially ground beef) from local farmers I know.

I first read about thus during the Taco Bell scare. Pink slime should not be considered meat. It gets you thinking about what is really in our meats.

Organic and/or local is the best way to go for meat and dairy
IMO.

Yep, read it and weep. Or puke. So glad we don't eat meat much. If we do, it's organic or local. I showed this to my kids and now they are saying that they will never eat hot dogs again. Score!

I would eat local over commercial organic any day.

Oh brother! Where do you find locally produced beef?

I actually just found the opposite on their website.

" “Is there any evidence that organic meat contains this pink slime?”

It turns out there isn’t. If your meat is stamped USDA Organic, it’s pure meat with no filler."

I think I may just buy a farm and raise my own food LOL. Seriously though...who can we trust? It's very disheartening.

Another reason, no matter what they say is or isn't in there, why I buy local.

That article was a follow up to the original airing. I guess more evidence was uncovered since it first broke. I am glad cause I've got a few organic 95% meat in the freezer.

I buy beefalo from Promised Land farm, which is where my farmshare is from. Beefalo is the animal that results when beef cattle are bred with bison. The result is a leaner and more nutritious meat.

Found the answer. Lexington Coop on Elmwood in Buffalo sells locally produced and organic meats. Um, they are basically amazing in everything else as well.

I agree, Lexington Coop is a great asset to the community. I just wish parking was easier on the weekends. It would be great if they had a location in the suburbs.

They are planning to expand by 2015 to either have more retail space on Elmwood, including parking, or an extra store in another location. For now, I just figure that it's in the city and I don't really expect to find good parking anyway. I did ask while there and they said that weekdays are much less busy and it's easier to park and such.

There was an interesting article in the Buffalo News today about which local grocers have "pink slime" or similar "meat trimmings" in their meat. CLICK HERE
