Has anyones kids had an ear infection that didn't go away after
given the antibiotic the first time around? My 10 mth old just had
her first ear infection, ended the amoxicillin Wednesday night and
she has been terribly miserable today and digging back in the same
ear that was infected. I don't know what to do. She's sleeping fine
and napped fine all day, she'll be fine and then miserable, and it
concerns me that she's picking back in that ear. I go back and
forth.....its so hard when they can't tell you whats wrong.

Yeah, my oldest son had that issue several times. Between the ages
of 1-3 it seemed like he had ear infections all the time. The
infection could still be there. How many days on antibiotics?

Oh man that had to have been hard! My boys are 3 and only had 2 ear
infections each and haven't had another one since they were 2. I am
really hoping she doesn't still have it, but ya never know. She was
on the antibiotic for 10 days. Besides her digging in her ear, it
got me thinking that maybe the amoxicillin didn't work because with
my one twin he always had to be in augmentin, the amoxicillin neve
cleared sinus infections up for him.

My son had ear infections for 8 months straight, from before age 1
to after age 1. They upped his antibiotic to Augmentin. He took
antibiotics for 8 months, but it never cleared. He did not talk,
had a hearing test and could not hear form all the fluid in there!
We had early intervention speech services AND I sought alternative
ear care. We took him to (what I felt) was a baby friendly
chiropractor (no "cracking") during his 8th infection and he has
not had one since. That was June 2010 : ) He babbled for the first
time after that first appointment with the chiro.....I felt like I
was in a movie because it was such a textbook response! His ears
drained, he started to babble and Early Intervention caught him up
by the time he was 3. We still go to the chiro. We avoided tubes by
choosing the chiro. I know this may be an extreme case, but that is
what we went through! Many sleepless nights with the reoccuring
infections, too. And may sick days taken from work. Such a relief
for us since we found our chiro : )

3keys2myheart, Yeah, it was very hard, but fortunately since he was
3 he hasn't had any ear infections. It took a few rounds of
Augmentin to work for him too. Amoxicillin never worked for him.
Good luck to you. I hope your pediatrician is more proactive about
this than my son's was.
