Anyone else in this group an Italian? I only ask because you might
be familiar with my "Pupa Culova" cookies. This is a tradition that
I learned from my grandmother and my aunt. I believe "pupa" means
baby, but I'm not sure how these cookies got the name. Anyway, my
grandmother used to make large flower cookies (she fluted the edges
of the dough) and then take a hard-boiled egg, place it in the
center, and then make criss-cross "handles" over the egg. She would
then glaze them with white frosting made w/confectioner's sugar and
water. Then she would sprinkle jimmies or those little colored
balls all over the icing. My aunt pretty much does the same. I
modified the recipe when my kids were smaller. I wanted the cookies
to look more like baskets and more colorful so I started putting
the dough into pot-pie tins (besides, I'm lousy at fluting edges
for the flower effect.) I also color the hard-boiled eggs first
before placing them in the un-baked dough and my baskets have one
handle going across the egg. And, since I'm not fond of jimmies, I
sprinkle mine w/the little colored balls only. They are not hard to
make so if anyone would like the recipe, please contact me here.
Here is a picture of what my finished "pupas" look like:

Oh, I forgot to add that I usually make about 3 dozen of these. My
family does their share of eating them, but I also give some away
to friends who have come to look forward to this every Easter.

In the Buffalo News yesterday there was a write up on these
cookies. I have never heard of them till your post. Looks
interesting, think I'll try them next year.
